Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is a natural state that we all experience every day, it is a state of highly focused attention that we experience, for example when we are absorbed in a good book or film, or when we daydream. You are not put to sleep, but are fully aware of all that is happening to you and can freely move and talk whenever you wish.
It is a wonderful feeling of deep relaxation that can be achieved by everyone who wants to. While experiencing the relaxation you will feel a heightened awareness and concentration.
The misconception and impression that many people hold is that hypnosis is something magical, mystical and a form of mind control. Hypnosis is in fact the complete opposite, as people visit hypnotherapists or utilise self-hypnosis because they want help to gain more control over their lives, not less.
The phenomenon of hypnosis is firstly, and most importantly, a natural state of mind, which means that virtually every person has the natural capacity for response to hypnosis. There is nothing unnatural or supernatural about it. Hypnosis is simply a natural state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness.
This change of consciousness is extremely comfortable and relaxing, just like those moments before you fall asleep and as you start wake up in the morning. You'll feel very relaxed, yet your mind will still be highly focused and aware. This in itself is very beneficial, particularly for those suffering with stress and anxiety issues, as it relaxes, refreshes and invigorates the mind and body.
Hypnosis is a means of moving into a perfectly natural state of mind, that people actually move in and out of several times a day. Everyone has experienced this trance like state, although they may not have called it hypnosis.
We all go in and out of different levels of consciousness all day. Daydreaming, reading, driving are all examples of everyday examples of when we enter an altered state of awareness.
During hypnosis, pregnant women are taught to breathe in rhythm with their contractions, encouraging deep physical and mental relaxation which reduces the ‘fear tension and pain’ syndrome. Visual imagery is included to help you bond with your baby during pregnancy and also to desensitize the fear of labour and birth. Self hypnosis helps stimulate the body’s own natural painkillers to ease discomfort and gives you the confidence in your ability to remain in control and give birth without fear.
You can also use hypnosis during the course of your pregnancy. It can ease tiredness and morning sickness, and improve your general wellbeing.
